Glassell Park Pool to Stay Open Through Labor Day

City recreation officials say they'd keep 33 "seasonal" pools open through the holiday.

The swimming pool at the Glassell Park Recreation Center on Verdugo Road and the Griffith Park Pool on Riverside Drive in Los Feliz would have both closed this coming Monday.

They're among the "seasonal" pools that the city's Department of Recreation and Parks had planned to shut down Monday, a day before LAUSD schools start on Aug. 14.

But now the two swimming pools are among 33 pools that will be open an extra three weeks, through Labor Day.

Council District 4 representative Tom LaBonge said in a news statement late Wednesday afternoon he would like to work with the city to keep the pools open as late as October.

Glassell, which was once a year-round pool, had already launched its own campaign for additional days as SaveGlassellPool.com. The pool, which is used for competitions by Eagle Rock High School students, was initially scheduled to be closed Aug. 12 because of budget cuts.

Echo Park Deep Pool, an indoor facility, is now the only year-round pool in the area.
