Eagle Rock Gathers to Honor John Stillion (PHOTO GALLERY)

The community volunteer and co-founder of Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful is remembered on his first death anniversary at a poolside brunch and fundraiser on Hill Drive.

"Once upon a time, I met a man who held the very breath of inspiration in his hand, as if it were a handkerchief he could wave at will—a magic kerchief that made impossible things come to life, made the stillness dance, and made people believe in their own dreams." That was how Cheryl Leutjen, vice-president of Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful, began her introductory speech Sunday in memory of the organization's co-founder, John Stillion, who died in April 2011 at the age of 79. An Eagle Rock resident for about 14 years, Stillion transformed every community he lived and worked in—starting with an inner-city L.A. school he taught at after graduating from UCLA and ending with a string of incomparable achievements in Eagle Rock. Solar Eclipse Seen Over Eagle Rock

Angelenos won't see such a spectacular celestial event for the next 59 years.

A rare solar eclipse occurred Sunday—with the moon blocking out the sun completely except for ring of fire—and the next such phenomenon won't be seen until 2071. Eagle Rock photojournalist Henk Friezer photographed the occurrence from the porch of his Eagle Rock home without the aid of filters or other enhancing photographing aids. He recorded the celestial evebt in its natural state from about 6:25 p.m. to 6:55 p.m. He did not witness the touted "ring of fire," though, which was evidently not visible locally.

Teacher Accused of Sexual Misconduct Stops Coming to Eagle Rock High

Roman Cisneros, a students dean turned PE teacher, hasn’t come to school since May 14.

An Eagle Rock High School physical education teacher accused by some parents of sexual misconduct has not been on campus since Monday, May 14, and has been replaced by a substitute teacher. The PE teacher, Roman Cisneros, has been moved to the so-called "rubber room," a reassignment center at LAUSD headquarters downtown, according to an ERHS staff member who spoke to Patch on condition of anonymity. Cisneros is scheduled to retire in July, according to ERHS Principal Salvador Velasco, and has not been charged with any crime. The ERHS staff member’s account of the PE teacher’s absence from campus confirmed a tip e-mailed to Patch Thursday evening by someone who claimed to be an LAUSD substitute teacher. Patch called LAUSD District 4 …

How to Get More Out of the L.A. Zoo: Question for Parents

A mom who has a membership to the zoo is tired of wandering around aimlessly.

To All You Parents Out There: We live so close to a great resource—the Los Angeles Zoo—and so our family, which includes three kids under 12, got a membership two months ago. We all love roaming around, and so we've been going every two weeks or so. It's enough to get our money's worth and support the zoo. But I can't help wondering if there's a way to have a more meaningful experience there. We wander past the animals in their environments and my kids enjoy hitting the playground. So my question to other moms and dads is what can we do to get our kids to engage with the animals and their stories a little more? I know I can hire a zoo tour guide, but that would cost us a whole lot—and that’s not why we bought a membership to begin with. …

A male was arrested near Toland Way in Eagle Rock, according to officers at the Wilshire Division of the L.A.P.D.

A male suspect in the fatal Saturday morning stabbing near Beverly Boulevard and Orlando Avenue in the Fairfax area was arrested near Toland Way in Eagle Rock, according to officers from the Wilshire and Northeast divisions of the Los Angeles Police Department. "He either lives there, or his parents live there," a Wilshire Division officer said, adding that the investigation also involves an area of Mount Washington. The arrest near Toland Way is the only arrest that has been made. Sgt. Sanford Rosenberg of the Northeast Division said Northeast officers were involved in the arrest as well. Happy Anniversary, Eagle Rock!

Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society President Eric Warren looks back 89 years, when Eagle Rock became part of Los Angeles.

Friday, May 18, marked the 89th anniversary of Eagle Rock’s annexation in 1923 to the City of Los Angeles. Okay—the number 89 isn’t exactly auspicious. But it’s a milestone worth commemorating. After all, the City’s extraordinary problems occasionally unleash a nostalgia in some Eagle Rock circles for the time when the community managed its own affairs. Patch asked Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society President Eric Warren to reflect on Eagle Rock’s momentous merger with what might be called “Mother Los Angeles.” Here are his responses to the questions we posed: Patch: Why did Eagle Rock decide to merge with Los Angeles in 1923—and was there more to the merger than an insufficient supply of water in the growing neighborhood? Warren: In …

Dealing with Roman Cisneros: Q&A with Principal Velasco (Video)

The Eagle Rock High principal tells parents that if they were concerned about allegations of sexual misconduct by the PE teacher, they were 'very negligent' in not reporting them to him.

This is the fourth installment of a video recording by Patch of a May 9 Q&A between Eagle Rock High School Principal Salvador Velasco and a group of parents who attended a meeting moderated by LAUSD District 4 Coordinator of Operations and School Safety Stephen Koffman. Almost the entire clip revolves around allegations of sexual misconduct by Roman Cisneros, a former students' dean who was voted out of the position by the school faculty in 2011 and who went on to become a PE teacher. Oxy Names Alumnus Bill Redell as Head Coach

The May 9 firing of Dale Widolff provides the right 'timing' for Redell's return.

Oxy Alumni Launch Online Petition to Support Fired Coach

Signatories pledge to cease financial support to Oxy unless it honors Dale Widolff ‘in a manner commensurate with his immense contribution to Occidental College.’

This past Thursday, we reported that Occidental College fired Dale Widolff, a legendary football coach, following a National Collegiate Athletic Association probe into alleged recruiting violations. During Widolff’s 30 years at Oxy, the college won 11 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, and Widolff’s 178 victories ranked him fifth among active NCAA Division III coaches. In response to the coach’s termination last week, a group of Oxy alumni has launched an online petition aimed at pressuring the college to reconsider its decision to fire him—or to honor him “in a manner commensurate with his immense contribution to Occidental College.” By signing the petition, titled "Honor Coach Widolff," signatories pledge to …

Although I do not know the content of the allegations against Dale, they do not justify the extreme measure taken by the school. As stated in earlier comments, Widolff held his scholar-athletes to the highest standards,on and off the field. Therefore I find it hard to believe that coach Widolff would bend the rules when he holds his players to such high standards! Coach Redell,a great coach in …   more ›
