Where the Sidewalk Ends June 19, 2013 at 03:55 pm
I'm all for this bag ban! I too use my plastic grocery bags to pick up dog poops, carry randomRead More things and what not... but I still end up with HUNDREDS of them left in my bag drawer. Good move L.A. city!!!!

Kathy - the LA Business Journal profiled a couple of LA-based plastic bag companies. One was on theRead More verge of going bankrupt as business from other cities who have already banned plastic bags dried up. The owners were bitter and blamed government for all of their problems and the fact that they had to lay off employees. The other business profiled converted their equipment to manufacture reusable bags, and saw a boom in their business, hiring more employees. Don't worry about business, the smart business owners will adapt, and the others... well, maybe they will find a desk job working for someone smarter than them. Their more nimble competitors will pick up the slack in employment.

Great point Elijah H! Also, don't forget that just just because the stores don't charge you for theRead More plastic bags now, they are in no way free- the costs are built in to the cost of the goods you buy. I do reuse my plastic as much as possible, but I still have a huge drawer full of them. And yes, you can still buy plastic bags if you want. I hope they do ban them- way to go, LA!

The opportunist here is the LACC District, who is essentially using this as an income-producingRead More commercial space - leasing it out to charters and non-profits and using the proceeds for whatever budget shortfalls they've incurred. Don't blame the charter school who would be paying rent wherever they locate - blame the horrendous mismanagement of the LACC Trustees.

This is the message I sent to Mr. Santiago. Dear Mr. Santiago: The community of North East LosRead More Angeles needs more community college access for its citizens. As a high school teacher for 14 years, I have seen my students struggle to get classes at Glendale Community College as they have been cut. Please return the Van de Kamps site to the intended purpose: a community college. Thank you, Lisa Karahalios Eagle Rock

I looked at this school for my son and was impressed with the educational experiences available toRead More these young people. Right now I am looking for classes for my daughter who needs ESL classes and East LAC is too far for her to go alone (16 years old). This community needs more choices for the adults and youth of this area. Why are the LACC Trusetees not inacting the choices we voters selected? There may be more to the story but the fact remains that the educational needs for this area are not being addressed by the current use of this property.
Thanks Dad!

I am a Dad and I think keeping newborns safe is very important. I do want to add that I think kidsRead More can be messed up in Lesbian and single mom households where Dads are not presents. Look at the freak that Cher has as a kid. Same with Barbra Streisand.

Does anyone care? 2) Local governments, when denying written requests for public records, will noRead More longer be required to give a reason for the denial. SB 71 purports to make that common sense requirement (found in Gov Code sec. 6255(b)) completely optional. What does optional mean? While many infectious diseases were once all but eliminated from the United States, there's evidenceRead More that climate change is a factor that could help them expand their range and make a comeback. http://www.nrdc.org/health/climate/disease.asp The increases in heat, precipitation, and humidity can allow tropical and subtropical insects to move from regions where infectious diseases thrive into new places. This, coupled with increased international travel to and from all 50 states, means that the U.S. is increasingly at risk for becoming home to these new diseases.

Why is the college not taking this issue seriously?
Hulga June 13, 2013 at 06:06 pm
Why is this a university matter? It's a criminal act and a police/ public safety matter. If he's aRead More serial rapist, put him on trial and jail him, if he's guilty. I know a lot of colleges handle what they consider to be minor criminal complaints, but rape is not a minor complaint and it should be handled by authorities that are equipped to handle it, which clearly Occidental College is not.

Don, "Most men are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." Abraham Lincoln, andRead More Will Rogers. When you combine that with how we project what we think the world is,....well, it is all in our minds. We are products of our sub-conscious. I read the basic early book on it many years ago, "The power of your subconscious mind", by Joseph Murphy. I read the book three time in a row, and began the process of changing my brain pattern to a very positive outlook. In all honesty, I was in the middle of changing things at that time and was ready for the info then. Almost no one changes their actual thought process and types of habits. Some ingrained from infancy, I am still working on. Sometimes I think of the girl who was the inspiration for the movie "homeless to Harvard" She said that all she did was, "everyday there are options, I just decided to do the right one everyday." Also, will smith in the based on a true story,"The pursuit of happiness" He went from homeless to multi-millionaire. Without the state of mind to change, they would have to win the lottery, and those odds are next to zero.

@heywood Cars and homes get broken into at night, and drug dealing is going down at all times. TheRead More most obvious occurs next to Glenrock, as well as on residential streets. It was a marked Police car. I too, am glad that the Police are patrolling our neighborhoods more as there have been many residential and vehicle break-ins over the past few months.
