I'm glad no one was hurt in this accident. I was sitting outside at Four Café at noon on a…Read More weekday last week and two cars speeding down Colorado nearly collided when one changed lanes suddenly. The two motorists started honking at each other angrily as they zoomed off. These were not testosterone-fueled teenagers on a joyride, but rather middle-aged women driving expensive new SUVs. Drivers treat Colorado's six lanes as a freeway, so it's not surprised they get enraged when anything (or anyone) gets in their way or slows them down. It's time to turn our main street into a local thoroughfare that motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians can share.

@ Elijah H-- Try the CA Highway Patrol "Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System" for…Read More more comprehensive statistics on accidents, including type of accident, vehicles and drivers, pedestrian/ bicyclists involved, day, time, surface conditions, locations, injuries, at fault determination, injuries, fatalities, etc. You'll need to log in, and then figure out how to operate the search parameters, but once you get the hang of it, the information provided is fairly reliable and updated often. I find it useful in my research.

I was the first person on the scene of this accident. (I am the big guy in the green scrubs in the…Read More photo.) I was fortunate to miss being involved in this accident by literally 2 seconds. I parked my car, shut off the engines on both vehicles (yes they were both running after the impact), and stayed with the driver in the blue Chevy until FD arrived. (A commercial ambulance also happened to be driving by and assisted until City paramedics arrived.) This was an unfortunate accident, but it did not involve any excessive speed, negligent driving, or how the lines were drawn on the road. It would be nice if the folks here would stop trying to turn this into some half-baked public safety political debate.

Billy, Why did you have an egg in your candy bag? LOL. Only in ER! : )
Joe Walker May 2, 2013 at 08:04 pm
I hope that Marjorie is realizing that egg'ing is an old Eagle Rock tradition. If you grew up in ER,…Read More you would never think to call the police. As far back as the 60's and 70's, egging was a thing ER kids did. I've had eggs thrown at me at bus stops in the 70's and maybe even saw a couple thrown from cars that I might be riding in. You know how cow tipping is done in farm area's by bored kids? Drag racing? Cruising? Well, ER has egging.

I’m not so much shocked about rape or sexual assault at Oxy, I’m shocked on how the Oxy…Read More administration has made it difficult for the victims, which in turn makes it harder to heal. These people are in place to guide, and mentor young minds, the future of America by their actions they betray the trust of these fragile souls.

There is no mention of gender in the penal code, so yes it is.
Hart Fisher April 21, 2013 at 08:16 pm
I find it quite interesting that the staff at Oxy are more concerned with hosting bike rallies for…Read More the removal of traffic lanes instead of focusing on keeping their students safe. The leadership at Oxy is confused about it's priorities.
The way they have handled the victims of these violent crimes has been astounding in it's shamefulness. I am truly sickened by their behavior.

P.S. Allred is working pro-bono according to one of these articles. I have no opinion of her one…Read More way or another. You may not like her but I bet you wouldn't want her legally gunning for you.

Great that's really good news. It would almost seem as though the collectives scared off those…Read More hooligans who would normally terrorize our fair city. Now all we have to worry about are the grade school and high schoolers getting stoned in between classes. Maybe the massage parlors could scare off even more of those merry pranksters, huh what do you think?

Yes Christina and Marjorie, i agree. Once announcing the location this allows individuals to…Read More schedule a different route. It is not that people think "Oh there is a DUI checkpoint in ER so maybe i should not drive drunk tonight". If that was proven people would just stop drinking because we would have DUI checkpoints 24/7. I think there should be officers posted outside of every bar, that would be a deterrence.
Christina G. April 12, 2013 at 05:57 pm
I agree in publicizing that checkpoints will be set up in the area, but not disclosing the actual…Read More locations.

Marjorie did you read the last sentence?
"Crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20…Read More percent when well- publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough, according to the LAPD."
well- publicized
well- publicized
This stems from A Calif. Supreme Court case known as Ingersol V. Palmer (1987) where they explained that Advanced Notice was 1 of 8 criteria that promoted constitutional checkpoints. Checkpoints are well misunderstood. Their primary purpose is to EDUCATE AND DETER. The reasoning behind giving notice to the community is to encourage people to find alternative ways of moving around while drinking or else the police will be looking to arrest you. Deterrence is the focal point of the goal not detect and arrest.

Thanks R! That freeway is a bit like swiss cheese in parts. I heard about the accident you mentioned…Read More from Marty who lives on the corner. Horrible and sad story. I understand that the woman was pregnant too. This roadway needs to me revisited by CalTrans for safety. The current usage by trucks and speeds people drive are not reflected in the calibre of the state routes barriers. I have been looking at the reconstruction and retrofit work that is happening on the 5 Fwy and assume that that is all up to current freeway construction code. The 134 could use such an upgrade.
Mark Charles April 9, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Hi Bill, I agree with you that people drive recklessly, but in these two instances, this was not the…Read More case. The first was a blown tire, and the second involved a drunk driver hitting the vehicle and sending it off the road. I'll take it as a compliment that you think I am out of my depth on this one. I care about things that I see and could be improved. I am happy to spend some time working on solutions. It'll be up to the powers that be if any money is going to be "wasted". I also agree with you that we can never make the freeways completely safe. I have to say that I feel that you are doing a disservice to the folks that died by implying that they were not intelligent people. If the video of my presentation left you with unanswered questions, I would be happy to meet with you to explain things further.
Kindly,
Mark Snelgrove

Somehow Jose Huizar and Michael…Read More Larsen have failed to protect us from these crimes even though medical marijuana dispensaries cannot be blamed any further after the Federal bullies came into our small town and threatened the collectives into closing. As a member of neighborhood watch I watched with bewilderment as the local prohibitionists lied about the cause of crime in our community, blaming it all on medical marijuana collectives when there was absolutely no evidence to support those claims. http://www.ccuwc.org/
