As comparison - St Bernard's schurch/school in Glassell Park has a similar set-up with buildings onRead More either side of Avenue 33. The students and teachers manage to navigate those crossings smartly and easily. I don't understand why - in an area where parking is even more dire - we feel it's necessary to offer special protection for the benefit of St. Dominic's school.
Elijah H May 25, 2013 at 04:07 pm
Parking is a problem in that area in general, which leads me to ask: Why do we give up an entireRead More block of free parking to St. Dominic's school on the block of Merton between Caspar and Maywood? That is prime parking space that could be used by patrons and employees of surrounding businesses! Are they untouchable because of their affiliation with the Catholic Church? What are the details of that sweet deal they have? When is it up for renegotiation?
Michael Turmon May 25, 2013 at 02:25 pm
"He also said it wasn't safe for people to sit outside on that intersection" This is notRead More a reasonable argument against having a coffee shop on that corner. Those cars actually crashed straight in to the front door. No business, with outdoor seating or otherwise, would be safe from a car crash like that. The real problem in that case is people driving too fast on Colorado. That was also the cause of the car that flipped over outside Trader Joes (reported on Patch), the other ones that took out the front area of Pete's (twice), the four-fatality crash, the one that smashed in to the chain link fence used for the Dahlia school underpass, and so many other crashes. The one relationship of bike lanes to parking around Swork is that, if biking is easier, it is easier to bike or walk to Swork, freeing up parking spaces. The coffee biz is very local, so it goes well with bicycling.

Hey Joey, how's it going selling bikes? You own a bike store. Anything you say is biased. So... HowRead More much you gettin' paid to blog & harass Eagle Rock & Highland Park residents? How much are you getting from the city or is this all about your own selfish concerns? I tell the truth because it's the truth, no massaging, no political spin, and oh yeah, I back up what I say with facts. So Joey... You sell any bikes today?
Josef Bray-Ali May 25, 2013 at 04:05 pm
Hart, if you don't like bike lanes because they will slow down car speeds I think we all canRead More understand that. It makes sense that many people wouldn't like that one aspect of this project. However, when you repeatedly misinterpret what officials have said about emergency response times and bike lanes you are moving into "crazy dude" territory.

Are you kidding me? So I'm supposed to believe the guy who doesn't work in Eagle Rock over theRead More captain of the Eagle Rock Fire Station House that's actually on Colorado blvd.? Are you kidding me? You know, the captain who signed the petition AGAINST removing vehicle lanes to install bike lanes (for the 2% who actually ride bikes on the streets vs. the rest). How much did you get paid for this article as it's full of holes & leaves out vital information, like the simple fact that the men of the Fire Station on Figueroa have come out against removing vehicle lanes on Figueroa and I can personally attest to the delay caused by the vehicle stripping on York. You see, fire trucks pass my home every week, last week 4 days in a row. I watch them get caught trying to get through traffic caused by the vehicle lane removal on York. Things I've seen with my own eyes. I caught LA Citydot lying about this at a Highland Park Neighborhood council meeting. When they said they had talked to someone, but had not. It was funny seeing them look at each other with blank stares, then I did it again over their lies about the road diet of Figueroa & manipulation of data to suit their $$$ agenda. So now they've found a dupe who rides a desk in the fire department so they can blackmail with political backlash, someone who doesn't even work in the neighborhood in question, and he's going to know better than the people who live & work here? I have to say, the Eagle Rock Patch has showed extreme bias in covering this issue & it makes me wonder what kind of payola the city is forking over to you for your blatant disregard for the safety of our neighborhood. Because we've found that a non-profit has hired professional bloggers to attack anyone who opposes removal of vehicle lanes to install bike lanes, that's right, you can't trust what's being presented to you by the Patch. Are you one of the paid mercenary bloggers put on this issue to ram it through? This is all about the state & city hungry for the federal bike lane $$$, millions of dollars here, instead of focusing on safety, a proper bike lane that does not endanger it's riders nor destroy functioning neighborhoods with gridlock, pollution & injured bicyclists. Way to cloud a simple issue with outsiders trying to destroy a wonderful neighbor hood with their meddling. Here's some actual truth to listen to, no one paid me for this post either. Remember that folks, people are being paid to get this agenda passed, hired guns who use fake names to attack residents of Eagle Rock, outsiders who want to screw up YOUR neighborhood for a fast buck & a false flag. http://1201beyond.com/archives/hart-attack/hart-attack-003.mp3

Hey Cal, This was actually my fault. Because I spend so much time on Moorpark Patch, I think IRead More automatically typed in "Moorpark" when helping out with getting the LA election news onto the Patch sites in Los Angeles . . . Usually when I make a silly mistake like this, I'll fix it behind the scenes before anything actually gets published. Last night, I found out one of the glitches to be ironed out in our new platform is items posted directly from other sites can't be deleted without deleting the original. Hopefully our tech genies get that fixed soon, but in the mean time, I'll definitely be more careful and keep our local site local (at least as much as I can. Some of the sponsored content is beyond my control).
Cal May 22, 2013 at 07:53 am
Dear Patch People... Why include an article in the Moorpark Patch that has to do with localRead More politics in LA? Why should this take up space in our Patch? Anybody following the elections in LA can turn to the LAT on line or any number of other sources if interested. Just wondering... I prize the local news and the timeleness of the Patch. Don't hold your breath ..garcetti was pandering for votes the day he voted against LAX expansion.heRead More knew full well it had the votes to pass. It was all a show..he became their hero.He cared nothing about his own communities in Hollywood..he will not do damn thing to protect Westchester communities. Bill Rosendahl knows this..he supported Greuel With Garcetti, the Millennium skyscraper developer funded and Hollywood Chamber supported Mayor and his Deputy, inheriting his CD 13 council seat, also Millennium developer funded and Hollywood Chamber supported ..Hollywood is finished.Pack up, sell and leave..before it's too late!Just as garcetti told us we all should do on the floor of council the day he got the Hollywood Community higher density Plan approved,to accommodate his developer funders projects...'If you dont like living in higher density Hollywood ..leave'..nice guy. That is how he 'engaged and listened to' communities and why there are now three law suits against the HCP and litigation against his developer funder massive projects.this is his legacy in Hollywood. And MORE crime in our communities, more shootouts, in the streets and in the nightclubs he encouraged the proliferation of. His 'Savior of Hollywood' PR was all bull. Greuel may have been supported by the unions but he certainly was not 'INDEPENDENT"..HE LIES... He sold Hollywood to his wealthy NYC developer funders, and he will sell other areas of L.A. to them too. Wait till he gets the Eminant Domain thing through for his developer funders.. those that voted for him..hope it is not your homes the city takes away for his developer projects! Sad and tragic, so few knew all the developer illegalities this guy has been involved in AND GOT AWAY WITH..Greuel campaign was WAY too soft on him. HE led city council voting to raise DWP salaries and wanted DWP support, when he did not get it he destroyed her and demonized them. 'Know thine enemy', his campaign was like the mafia.. dont cross them..but if you want to beat them.. you better be prepared to come out with gloves on and go after THEM..And there was alot to go after..and be willing to NOT run a 'classy' campaign. It's never too late for investigations! Visit PeopleForLivableCommunities/SaveHollywood and StopTheMillenniumHollywood.org All born out of Garcetti ignoring and dismissing communities in his own District, that he destroyed!

A warning for those running for office. 1. Don't pander to unions; ie, IBEW/DWP. Folks look at theirRead More DWP bill and think, hmmmm is this bill going to be higher 2. Keep outside folks like Clinton and Boxer out of local elections. It's suppose to be a nonpolitical office (even though we know it isn't) but what it does do is piss off those that might consider voting for one over the other. 3. Don't pander to women. Guys vote also so all the talk about the first woman mayor may be okay, but don't make it a big platform item. There you have it all free of charge.

When it says the Los Angeles Times 'endorses' someone or something does that mean they took a voteRead More of all employees working at the Times or is it just a meaningless blurb by a small coven of inflated corporate propagandists kissing A with the Federal government or some other powerful special interest influence?
Gil Cedillo is the billboard industry's candidate of choice for CD1--but is he yours?
Elijah H May 21, 2013 at 04:47 pm
The southern bit of Eagle Rock Boulevard is in CD1, and it is certainly at risk of being floodedRead More with billboards. We already have a huge, obnoxious one at the entrance to the 2 North. Typically is features some half-naked bimbo peddling beer or something. The last thing we need is more blight along that section of ER Blvd.
Robert Guevara May 21, 2013 at 03:36 pm
I agree that Gil Cedillo is bad news for a several reasons, but he's not representing CD-14 so onlyRead More CD-1 voters can vote for Jose Gardea to defeat this Sacramento veteran professional politician. Gil even says his "connections" will be used to improve the district- however the "connections" were earned at a price, as you see the many billboards, a lot outside CD-1 just to be sure every one sees it- and if free, even better for the candidate. Being a long-time buddy of Antonio Villaraigosa is a negative, and Gardea has been the candidate thoroughly familiar with CD-1 as Chief of Staff to Reyes. The Professional Politician, schooled in political maneuvering while in the Sacramento Finishing School is something I don't like for L.A. Herb Wesson is one Sacramento alum whose managing the L.A. Redistricting and city council to his liking as political pay-back. There were 5 ex-Sacramento lawmakers in the city council and Villaraigosa was another. Locally familiar candidates would be better for LA than job hopping politicians searching for another office to fill- and at a hefty pay rate, $15,000/month. Being compromised with heavy support is what I see. The Wikipedia listing for Cedillo fills in more, dream act and drivers license for "undocumented" aliens were strongly supported - and that may be a "plus" for some voters, but priorities should be in keeping the state and city fiscally sound.

I'm glad no one was hurt in this accident. I was sitting outside at Four Café at noon on aRead More weekday last week and two cars speeding down Colorado nearly collided when one changed lanes suddenly. The two motorists started honking at each other angrily as they zoomed off. These were not testosterone-fueled teenagers on a joyride, but rather middle-aged women driving expensive new SUVs. Drivers treat Colorado's six lanes as a freeway, so it's not surprised they get enraged when anything (or anyone) gets in their way or slows them down. It's time to turn our main street into a local thoroughfare that motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians can share.

If she has Huizar's endorsement, that cinches my decision for me, I'm going for Garcetti! Huizar hasRead More been the worst councilman this district's ever had, though he may amicable as an individual, he has destroyed his district. Also with all the moneys that unions have poured into her campaign and smear ads they paid for, they will want to get returns from Greuel. Unions have enough greed, most city employees are already overcompensated (for very little work and lots of time off)and with Greuel in the top office they will expect more. It is bad enough that they hold the city hostage with their strike threats, now they want to control the mayors office as well. If they feel they are not compensated enough let someone else take their position there are plenty of people who would gladly do it. Isn't it ironic that the words greed and union have the same amount of letters!

My name is Monica Alcaraz, I was one of the organizers of the event and talked to Greuel's camp. WeRead More tried to make every accommodation for her. We originally suggested the 29th and 30th. I was told by Nate Howard, that her camp ask that we make it a meet and greet. I explained that we wanted a debate not a meet and greet. Then Greuel's camp came back and said they could not do the 29th & 30th. They suggested the 1st or the 6th, we went back to Garcetti and he said he would debate any day Greuel could do it. Then Greuel's camp said they could no longer do the 1st but that they could do the 6th. So again we went back to Garcetti and he agreed to do the 6th. I went back to Greuel's Camp and told them Garcetti agreed on the 6th and the very next day they said they had to decline after agreeing. We really bent over backwards to accommodate Wendy. It was also suggested, if we had a media sponsor that Wendy would definitely participate. Which I responded, we (NELA) should be important enough for her to participate without a media sponsor. We had about 20 community organization that wanted to be part of this event. This was the same thing that happens when we had our forum. We could not get an answer from her camp for a long time of course she declined as well. What is even more upsetting, is that our original dates suggested of the 29th and 30th, which they did not have events for until after the we approached them, we find out that Wendy agreed to a debate on the Westside on the 29th. I was a Wendy supporter, until all this happened, girl power and all. But if you do not care about my community you will not serve us well or at all. Wendy has said we need a mayor for all Los Angeles, I guess the Northeast is not part of her Los Angeles.

Gil Cedillo is like a carpetbagger, besides being corrupt and unscrupulous he is virtually unseen inRead More the areas he represents unless he is up for re-election or running for another office. Though I don't know much about his opponent or his record, he has to be a better choice than Cedillo. In South Pasadena he only shows up when there is a large crowd (like a parade) or when it benefits him not his constituents. With all the ads I have received he is obviously well funded by special interests, so I am supporting the less connected opponent,

The current tax hike was part of our past governors attempt at controlling the budget.Read More http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/01/california-gas-tax_n_2788918.html In addition, California's gas is more expensive because of the blends of gasoline that we use as it compares to other states and the fact that the state makes it difficult for new refineries to be built, a condition that oil companies like very much. This lack of competition, coupled with our different blends contributes to the inflated prices that we pay. This is played out in Northern California where their low priced regular is what we pay in So.Cal for our premium grade. Your analysis is good, but leans on taxes being misappropriated makes it seem that a giant conspiracy takes place. Unfortunately, I cannot address these individual concerns about tax money being diverted and the freedom of information act allows for resourceful citizens and press to dig deeper and uncover these. City, County and State funding mechanisms rely on funding mechanisms Unfortunately, much of the blame on these mechanisms can be blamed on our citizenry passing funding laws against general funds through the form of propositions or parcel taxes. Our state doesn't allow for the sunset or referendum of certain propositions and they stay on the books way longer than necessary.
