Teenager Believed to be Part of Tagging Crew Shot in Highland Park

Thursday's shooting was the first reported in the neighborhood in May.

Detectives from the LAPD's Northeast Division Gang Unit are investigating the shooting of a male teenager near Avenue 53 and North Figueroa Street on Thursday afternoon. According to Detective David Mejia, the teen was grazed in the side of his torso with a bullet at around 3 p.m. on Thursday and is expected to fully recover. Mejia said the victim and another teen (exact ages could not be provided for either), were walking southbound on Figueroa near Avenue 54 when they were approached by another pair of teenagers. "They got into some kind of dispute and that escalated into a physical fight," Mejia said. Mejia said the victim and his partner ran away from the scene on foot, before doubling back to the area of 5300 North Figueroa, at which …

I suppose as soon as the young man makes his expected full recovery, he will be tagging again. In a side note, kudos once again to Northeast Graffiti Busters. I used the online Anti-Graffiti Request System for two locations in ER ( http://anti-graffiti.lacity.org/welcome.cfm), and one day later both sites were cleared of graffiti.   more ›

How Long Does it Take Vandals to Tag a Freshly Painted Sign in Eagle Rock?

The answer may surprise you—and spur you into action the next time you see graffiti.

Graffiti taggers have been active in Eagle Rock lately. On Wednesday, crew members from Northeast Graffiti Busters were busy cleaning up a mess that vandals had created on the eastern end of Eagle Rock’s stretch of Colorado Boulevard near Figueroa Street. As these photos show, the wall of a two-story office building on 1053 Colorado Blvd. has a square-shaped coat of fresh yellow paint. (No prizes for guessing what was there before.) According to Eagle Rock resident Kaye Beckham, whose office is on 1063 Colorado Blvd., there was black spray paint on signs near the Monte Bonito Drive crossing. When Beckham came to work on Wednesday, she found an anti-graffiti crew member painting over the tags. Well, guess what—by Wednesday afternoon, the …

New Utility Scam Targets DWP, SoCal Gas Customers

Officials warn of multi-state scam in which LADWP and SoCal Gas customers are approached and told President Obama will pay their bills.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Southern California Gas Company are warning customers about a scam in which Social Security numbers from victims are collected by convincing them that President Obama will pay their utility bills. Suspects go door to door, send texts and even use social media, telling their targets that Obama is offering a special program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. The victims must provide their Social Security number, and are given a bank routing number to pay the bills with. However, the number is fraudulent and bills are not paid. Officials at both the LADWP and SoCal Gas say that all employees wear identification badges, and do not collect payments door to door, nor do they call or …

What Happened on Cedaredge Avenue Three Saturdays Ago: A Reader Calls on Patch

Police are investigating a possible hit and run near Hill Drive.

Every so often in Eagle Rock, all kinds of things happen that few see or hear about—and they don’t even make a blip on the Internet. What happened on Cedaredge Avenue, off Hill Drive, on Saturday, April 28, at around 4 p.m. fits that category of incidents that would have gone entirely unreported were it not for the watchful—and curious—attitude of community folk who live nearby. Patch received a frantic e-mail Tuesday afternoon from Cedaredge resident Sallie Gonzalez about a man who she said she saw just across from her house three Saturdays ago, down on the secluded street, with a swollen, bloody face, shattered eye socket and broken ribs. “To me it looked like he was beaten by a baseball bat,” Ms. Gonzalez wrote, wondering if the …

CRIME UPDATE: Alleged ‘Crowbar’ Attacker Charged with Attempted Murder

The suspect allegedly attacked a woman on Floristan Avenue on May 8.

A 21-year-old Eagle Rock resident who was arrested last week on suspicion of  allegedly attacking a woman with a crowbar is in jail facing felony charges for attempted murder, Lt. Mike Menza, an LAPD watch commander at the Northeast Community Station, said Monday. The suspect allegedly attacked his victim on Floristan Avenue on the evening of May 8 and was arrested from his home on the 1600 block of Fair Park Avenue, a short walk from Eagle Rock High School. The suspect was identified as Isaac Garza by his father, Juan Garza, a general contractor, who blamed the alleged attack on drugs. “Anyone who attacks somebody with a crowbar without provocation is probably mentally ill,” Lt. Menza said, adding that he did not have any details about …

Had a Bike Stolen? The Sheriff's Department Might Have it

Three men have been arrested for burglaries related to some 50 bicycles across L.A. and beyond.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has recovered around 50 bicycles in a bike burglary sting, and is looking for owners who might have had their bikes stolen. Three men were arrested at a bike owner's home in Rancho Cucamonga as they were preparing to enter a garage and steal a bike. The group had been repeatedly posing as potential bike buyers on Craigslist, and then establishing enough information about the buyer to find their addresses.   They also used publicly posted information on Facebook and the White Pages website to find people selling bikes, according to a news statement from the department. The trio would then take the stolen goods, which were usually high-end bikes worth $5,000 to $15,000, and sell them at a bike shop…
