Principal Salvador Velasco answers questions from Eagle Rock High School parents.
On the night of Wednesday, May 9, Eagle Rock High School Principal Salvadaor Velasco answered a series of parents’ questions in a forum at the school library moderated by LAUSD District 4 Coordinator of Operations and School Safety Stephen Koffman. Annick Draghi, LAUSD director for secondary schools in District 4, presided over the forum. As this short video shows, the Q&A session was contentious and frequently charged. Velasco was quizzed about his reasons for the firing in February of Steven Jovanelly, an ERHS alumnus who, by all accounts, was a widely respected junior varsity football and basketball coach as well as a substitute teacher. The issue caused about 75 students to walk out of their classes on Tuesday—and Velasco noted at the …

Dale Widolff, a 30-year veteran, won 11 SCIAC titles.
Occidental College has fired its head football coach, Dale Widolff, following a National Collegiate Athletic Association probe into alleged recruiting violations, college officials announced Wednesday. A coach at Oxy for 30 years, Widolff was suspended for six weeks without pay in August 2010 after the college discovered that he had allegedly violated NCAA rules and college policies. "We take violations of the rules very seriously and believe that, however difficult, we have done the right thing," said Occidental College Athletic Director Jaime Hoffman. "Our top priority is to ensure that the future of our student-athletes is not placed in jeopardy." This is the second investigation into Occidental's football program in two years. The NCAA…

The mixed martial arts favorite wins nearly 50 percent of the votes.
In the end, the power and allure of Hollywood didn’t quite appear to do for Cardio Barre what strong, local support did for XTC Xtreme Training Center in this week’s Best Fitness Studio Poll, which was launched Monday and which garnered 236 votes. While Cardio Barre got 64 votes, XTC got 116—nearly twice as many. (We can’t tell, of course, whether Melissa Joan Hart, Dakota Fanning and Jenna Elfman voted for Cardio Barre, whose ballet-inspired workouts helped the actresses stay in shape.) Here are the full results: Total votes: 236 XTC Xtreme Training Center: 116 (49 percent) Cardio Barre: 64 (27 percent) CrossFit Eagle Rock: 48 (20 percent) Pilates Eagle Rock: 6 (2 percent) Revolutions Cycling Studio: 2 Many thanks to all our readers who …

Take our weekly poll—this time, put your mouse where your muscles are.
Quick question: Besides being actresses, what do Melissa Joan Hart, Dakota Fanning and Jenna Elfman have in common? If you found yourself stretching your mental muscles in vain, here’s the answer: They have all done a ballet-inspired workout that is offered as a class for beginners at the Cardio Barre franchise on Colorado Boulevard. Cardio Barre’s calorie-busting workouts, whether done one-on-one or in a group, are among the hottest in town. But how does cardio pumping and muscle tearing compare to the mixed martial arts that are a staple of the XTC Xtreme Training Center, about a mile or so east of Cardio Barre along the Colorado corridor? Or, for that matter, how does all that frenetic activity stack up against the “Gyrotonics” and “…

From the Doritos baby to Ferris Bueller, Super Bowl Sunday delivered plenty of laughs. Which ad reigned supreme? Take our poll.
- OPINION

Monday, February 6
The New York Giants may have been the big winners Sunday, but one question remains: Which was the best Super Bowl commercial of 2012? This year's ads featured plenty of Super Bowl Sunday staples—funny babies, cute dogs and a bunch of celebrities (Jerry Seinfeld, Clint Eastwood, Betty White and David Beckham, to name a few). The Associated Press reports that companies paid an average of $3.5 million for a 30-second spot during Sunday's game, which was expected to attract 111 million-plus fans. However, nearly half of the 70 Super Bowl advertisers circulated their ads online in the days leading up to the game. By Sunday, Honda's CRV-ad with Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller had been viewed more than 10 million times, the Miami Herald …
