Oxy Names Alumnus Bill Redell as Head Coach

The May 9 firing of Dale Widolff provides the right 'timing' for Redell's return.

Oxy Alumni Launch Online Petition to Support Fired Coach

Signatories pledge to cease financial support to Oxy unless it honors Dale Widolff ‘in a manner commensurate with his immense contribution to Occidental College.’

This past Thursday, we reported that Occidental College fired Dale Widolff, a legendary football coach, following a National Collegiate Athletic Association probe into alleged recruiting violations. During Widolff’s 30 years at Oxy, the college won 11 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, and Widolff’s 178 victories ranked him fifth among active NCAA Division III coaches. In response to the coach’s termination last week, a group of Oxy alumni has launched an online petition aimed at pressuring the college to reconsider its decision to fire him—or to honor him “in a manner commensurate with his immense contribution to Occidental College.” By signing the petition, titled "Honor Coach Widolff," signatories pledge to …

Although I do not know the content of the allegations against Dale, they do not justify the extreme measure taken by the school. As stated in earlier comments, Widolff held his scholar-athletes to the highest standards,on and off the field. Therefore I find it hard to believe that coach Widolff would bend the rules when he holds his players to such high standards! Coach Redell,a great coach in …   more ›

Oxy Fires Head Football Coach for Alleged Recruiting Violations

Dale Widolff, a 30-year veteran, won 11 SCIAC titles.

Occidental College has fired its head football coach, Dale Widolff, following a National Collegiate Athletic Association probe into alleged recruiting violations, college officials announced Wednesday. A coach at Oxy for 30 years, Widolff was suspended for six weeks without pay in August 2010 after the college discovered that he had allegedly violated NCAA rules and college policies. "We take violations of the rules very seriously and believe that, however difficult, we have done the right thing," said Occidental College Athletic Director Jaime Hoffman. "Our top priority is to ensure that the future of our student-athletes is not placed in jeopardy." This is the second investigation into Occidental's football program in two years. The NCAA…

It is clear, right or wrong about violations, the duration of mentorship and positive leadership is a clear argument for minimal sanctions and strong warnings not dismissal. One of the biggest violations was committed by the college themselves by taking this action during finals week. All football players are effected. This is a demonstration of the prejudice toward the football program as a …   more ›

China’s Global Rise to be Discussed at Occidental College Saturday

A symposium of journalists, scholars, energy and trade experts will address how the U.S. and Canada are meeting the geopolitical and environmental challenges of China’s growth.

China’s insatiable appetite for energy against the backdrop of its rise as the next global superpower is a subject that has long concerned policymakers. It’s fair to say that many of them probably get a headache just thinking about how the planet’s scarce energy sources can possibly meet the growing demands of the world’s most populous nation. Whether or not you share much of the world’s concerns about China’s rapid growth, you should know that a serious discussion about the American and Canadian approaches to the subject is scheduled on Saturday right here in Eagle Rock. On April 28, Occidental College and the Consulate General of Canada will sponsor a symposium on the implications of China's rise from the point of view of politics, …

‘Obama for America’ Campaign in Eagle Rock

The president’s supporters, many of them from Oxy, will be registering voters at Friday’s Eagle Rock Farmers’ Market.

Planning to hit the Eagle Rock Farmers’ Market Friday evening? If so, get ready to run into members of the “Obama for America Campaign in Eagle Rock.” That’s right—while the president is busy competing with Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in their race to woo voters in the November general election, his followers have launched a campaign for his re-election right here in Eagle Rock, where Obama lived as an Occidental College freshman in the early 1980s. Obama’s supporters will be at the Eagle Rock Farmers’ Market on Caspar Avenue this evening, Friday, trying to register voters “and get more people involved,” according to an e-mail that Patch received from Karthik Raman, the media liaison for Obama for America in Eagle Rock. “So…

Looking Back at Occidental College

A trip down memory lane during the 125th anniversary celebrations Friday of L.A.'s first liberal arts college.

As Occidental College launched a yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary Friday, longtime Eagle Rock resident and photojournalist Henk Friezer dug into his extensive archives of Northeast Los Angeles and came up with a selection of photographs that highlight the historic events in the life of our neighborhood institution that was founded in 1887 as as L.A.'s first and only liberal arts college.
